Black History Month 1985: Rep. Shirley Chisholm

In the first of a series of events scheduled in celebration of 1985's Black History Month at the North Campus of Florida Junior College (now FSCJ), former presidential candidate and member of the U.S. House of Representatives Shirley Chisholm addressed the students and faculty. In her speech, Rep. Chisholm highlights the value of education, and the struggles African-Americans have faced to win educational opportunities. She also emphasizes the importance of Black History Month, and of knowing and honoring history. During a Q&A session at the end, Rep. Chisholm discusses why she ran for President, and her opinion of Jesse Jackson's Presidential bid. This event was introduced by FJC Vice President and North Campus Provost Ezekiel Bryant. Also on the stage are Rep. Corrine Brown, Rev. Henry C. Williamson, and FJC Foundation President Donald Zell. The full video of this event included an introduction by Williamson and a vocal performance by student Samuel D. Ross, which were trimmed due to poor video and audio quality.

This event took place on February 8, 1985 and was the fourth lecture in the College’s Forecast 85 series.
