Floods are a recurring problem in Bihar, causing massive destruction to life, property, and agriculture. To tackle this issue, the Government of Bihar, in collaboration with national agencies, has taken several proactive steps to mitigate the impact of floods and improve preparedness in flood-prone areas. Below are the key initiatives undertaken by the government:

Provision of Modern Rescue Operation Kits: The government has equipped flood-prone districts with modern rescue kits, including life-saving equipment, to ensure quick and effective response during floods. This helps local authorities conduct rescue operations efficiently and save lives during emergencies.

Distribution of Motorboats: To enhance mobility in flooded areas, the government has provided ten motorboats to each of the 28 flood-prone districts in Bihar. These boats are crucial for rescuing stranded people, delivering relief supplies, and transporting essential goods during floods.

Training by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF): The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been actively involved in training Bihar’s home guards. This training focuses on rescue and relief operations, ensuring that local teams are well-prepared to handle emergencies, and can assist in evacuations and relief efforts.

Construction of Flood Shelters: To protect the vulnerable population, the state government has initiated the construction of 200 flood shelters across flood-affected districts. These shelters provide safe refuge to people during floods, ensuring that they have access to food, medical care, and temporary housing.

Training Master Trainers: The NDRF has trained master trainers in Bihar to enhance local capacity for search and rescue operations, first aid, and community preparedness. These trainers lead capacity-building programs and awareness campaigns in their districts to improve overall flood preparedness at the grassroots level.

Inter-Linking of Rivers Projects: To address the root causes of floods and manage water flow effectively, the government has planned several projects aimed at inter-linking rivers. This initiative will help divert excess water from flood-prone rivers to drier regions, reducing the frequency and intensity of floods in the state.
