Exciting update about our new Women and Children’s Hospital 

We’re pleased to share a major update on our journey to deliver the new Women and Children’s Hospital for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. 

Following confirmation from Government of capital funding and a construction start date of 2027/28, we’ve been working closely with the New Hospital Programme to identify a new Preferred Way Forward for the hospital’s location and delivery. 

What’s changing? 

We’ve determined the new hospital will be best located and built to the west of the Royal Cornwall Hospital site, opposite the Trelawny Wing Main Entrance instead of at the centre of the site. 

It means we can create a Pathology Hub in the Link Corridor area of the hospital, co-locating key services including microbiology, haematology, blood sciences, and the mortuary. 

The existing microbiology building will be demolished to make way for the new hospital footprint. 

A new main entrance will be developed as part of the redesign. 

Why we’ve made the switch 

The new location is a more accessible site for contractors to build the hospital which will improve project deliverability 

The new location will reduce disruption to hospital operations and patient access during construction 

Across the programme, it means fewer services will need to be relocated lowering overall risks.
