Last year we held a “PAAC Coders Kick-Off” meeting for anyone on PAAC that was writing code. This included developers writing code as well as System Administrators writing scripts, General business people, schedulers and many more. After that meeting we formed 3 “Task Forces” to address the top listed priorities that we gathered from the responses of those that attended. Among those was Source Control. After debating and evaluating numerous options it was determined that we would standardize on Git for our source control platform. Git has wide growing adoption in the industry, is cross platform, supports a number of workflows and does not require a centralized server along with many other noteworthy features. Below are remarks about Git from the Git website:

Git is a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency.
Git is easy to learn and has a tiny footprint with lightning fast performance. It outclasses SCM tools like Subversion, CVS, Perforce, and ClearCase with features like cheap local branching, convenient staging areas, and multiple workflows.


To ensure success in this endeavor we are planning 3 hands-on training sessions. These will be hands on course if possible please bring a laptop to follow along or pair up with a neighbor. Feel free to ask questions, even if you feel there are “silly”. Chances are a number of people in the room have the same question and are waiting for some brave soul to ask on their behalf.
• Part 1 will cover why we need source control, how the selection was made, an introduction to Git, many of the basic commands and some of the tooling to help you use Git.
• Part 2 will cover some best practices will using Git, branching strategies and some level 201 & 301 Git commands/topics.
• Part 3 will be an Advanced Git session
