Santesi Dala Bissno Dil Grappa's millenary history.
The first settlements at the foot of the hills, where the Brenta river flows into the plain, are testified by the remains of the necropolis of S. Giorgio di Angarano, where artifacts dating back to the 11th-9th centuries were discovered. C.

Roman colonization probably dates back to the 2nd century BC. C .. And perhaps the name of the city derives from a Bassianus, a Roman colonist who owned a fundus, that is, an agricultural property. Middle Ages, the Ezzelini and the Visconti (568-1404)

Few traces remain of the Lombard (568-774) and Frankish (774-888) dominations, while the following period is marked by the first news (998) of the existence of the parish church of S. Maria, which together with the castle, first named once in 1150, it constituted the first nucleus of Bassano.

Soon Vicenza, aware of the strategic importance of the new settlement, wanted to impose its supremacy, making an assembly of 800 Bassano people swear a pact of fidelity and obedience (1175).
In the following decades, the history of Bassano intertwined with the political and military events of the Ezzelini: their power derived from the landed wealth, increased by the investiture of the "tithes" received by the bishop of Vicenza and from the proceeds of the "mude", ie duties at the gates of the village. The supremacy of the Ezzelini, if on the one hand it limited the municipal autonomy, on the other it favored, through the experience of the administration of Ezzelini's assets, the formation of the first municipal magistracies.
When, in 1259, Ezzelino III died, the Bassanesi asked for the protection of Padua and were assigned the goods and rights that had belonged to the Ezzelini, regulating communal life with the Statutes.
After the brief Vicentine domination (1260- 1268), Bassano went through a troubled period, which saw it subjected to Padua, Verona and again to Padua and which ended in 1388 with its passage under the Visconti. The Visconti period is characterized by a relative autonomy of the city, testified by the last drafting of the Statutes in 1389.
Venetian rule (1404-1797)
On 10 June 1404 Bassano passed under the Republic of Venice. The dedication pacts provided for the maintenance of the statutes and customs of the municipality. Bassano was erected as a Podesta Office, governed by a Podestà and Capitanio chosen by the Senate from among the Venetian patricians.
The Bassano area extended to the east as far as Pove, Cassola and Rossano, to the south to Tezze sul Brenta, to the north to Primolano, while to the west it was limited by the course of the Brenta, with the bridgehead of the hamlet of Angarano in the Vicenza area.
The four centuries of domination of the Serenissima brought to Bassano a long period of peace, interrupted only between 1509 and 1513 by the war of the League of Cambrai, and characterized by a great development of economic activities, such as the processing and trade of wool, silk and leathers and goldsmiths. In the artistic life the dynasty of da Ponte painters became famous in the 16th century, while in the field of publishing the Remondini printing house dominated the book and print market throughout the eighteenth century, making Bassano known throughout Europe.
On December 27, 1760 the Venetian Senate raised Bassano to the rank of city
The bridge
The presence of the bridge over the Brenta between the towns of Bassano and Angarano is documented for the first time in the chronicle of Gerardo Maurisio relating to the year 1209. Over the centuries the bridge, of vital economic and military importance, was often destroyed by war and by full of the Brenta and always rebuilt, sometimes in stone and sometimes in wood.
After yet another collapse, in 1569, the Council commissioned Andrea Palladio to design a wooden bridge: it seems, however, that the famous architect did not design the bridge from scratch, but started from an already existing model, documented in a map of 1557.
The "Palladian" bridge was destroyed by another flood in 1748 and rebuilt with some variations in 1751 by Bartolomeo Ferracina
