As defending champion, Karen struggled here in the LP, eventually losing the title to an inspired Linda Carbonetto. A month later she was diagnosed with stress fractures in both legs and watched the World Championships at the Broadmoor from a wheelchair, in which she was interviewed by Dick Button. She didn't return to the ice until May of 1969 but from then on was never defeated in National competition.
