Описание к видео 3 Lessons from Translators for Presentations

I'm giving you 3 lessons I learned from translators for presentations on this week's episode of MasterTalk. Visit https://www.rockstarcommunicator.com/ to attend one of my FREE LIVE online trainings.

1. Understand what your audience is saying and the context as to why they’re saying it in the first place. (1:06)

The challenging part of translating anything is this idea of culture. Just because I say the exact same thing in different languages doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m saying the same thing. Take the example of break a leg; in the English language, when someone says that, they don’t actually want you to break your leg, they’re wishing you good luck, but in other languages, that could literally mean hey go break your leg man. That’s why when the best translators in the world move from one language to the other, they always need to understand the cultural context of both languages to make it more effective and useful to the people hearing it.

Same thing applies for presentations and speaking to your audience. Just because an audience member is asking you for something doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what they’re actually looking for. Take 10-year-old Rebecca. She comes up to me at the end of one of my workshops and says eh, Brenden, can you help me with my communication skills? And she looks really disappointed and sad while saying it.

2. Open-mindedness leads to greater understanding and new ideas worth sharing to others. (3:12)

Tim Doner, in his famous TEDx Talk, about how he learned over 20+ languages in a few years accredited his success to community. What he meant by this was how the best way to learn a language is to go up to people who know it better than you and converse with them, as someone who’s trying to learn, what surprised him the most whether it was YouTube videos he’d post to get feedback on how he was speaking to the local New York community he would talk to is how open people are when you try to embrace and understand their culture.

There’s a great quote that summarizes this thought well from Nelson Mandela. “If you talk to someone in a language they understand, that goes to their head. If you talk to them in their language, that goes to their heart.”

As speakers, our goal is to touch the heart, not the head, in the same way that great copywriters and translators are able to describe the same emotions as the original creator intended, by opening ourselves to new ideas and new ways of understanding, we are able to build interesting techniques and ways of achieving a result or skill that we can then share with the world in the same way that Tim was able to share a lot of unconventional strategies to supercharge the learning of a new language. In other words, the lesson here is that the more you embrace the ideas of others, the more they will embrace you and share ways of seeing the world that will enhance the lessons you teach to the people who want to hear from you.

3. Being a phenomenal translator is a necessary skill to any world class speaker. (5:12)

Translators spend their lives moving languages from one to the other, and making sure the exact meaning of each word in how the person intended it to be is met, and that’s a beautiful thing especially since most of them go un-noticed working behind the scenes to make sure that we can be transformed by the ideas of those that we do not know the language. Being the speaker that you are demands a similar way of thinking, but front and center. If you are someone who has important ideas to share, your responsibility and duty is to translate what your audiences tell you in a meaningful way with the spotlight on you, that is the ultimate challenge of being a speaker.

Anyone who’s world class at this has a keen sense in understanding the problems of the audiences they want to help and create material that translates everything they’re telling you in a simple, effective way that helps everyone after you. That’s why I spend a very long time talking to as many fans of the channel as I possibly can to understand who they are and what they aspire to be, so I can make videos and create better ways of thinking about public speaking that no one else has done before.
