Dutch River Waal is a major river which serves as the main waterway connecting Port of Rotterdam and the Ruhrgebiet in Germany. It is the main distributary branch of river Rhine, the river carries 65% of the total flow of the Rhine.
The goal of the Dutch Room for the River Programme is to give the river more space to be able to manage higher water levels.
This includes the lowering of floodplains, relocating dikes further inland, lowering river groynes, and deepening summer beds. Dikes will only be reinforced where other options are either too costly or below optimal requirements.
