One of the first skills I teach beginning mellophone students PITCH BENDING! Pitch bending is a great way to gain flexibility, tone development, and to encourage upper and lower LIP INDEPENDENCE.

In the last several posts, we have learned about anatomical differences in the roles between the upper and lower lip in brass playing. Since the lower lip is not connected to as many muscles (and because of its placement on the jaw), it’s much more mobile than the upper lip. This is so helpful in pitch bending and in defending lower, not just for horn, but MELLOPHONE as well!

Do this off the horn first (check out my reel on UPPER LIP = STABLE, LOWER LIP = FLEXIBLE) to get the feel and look of this before moving to the horn.

Start on G in the staff
While keeping the upper lip secure and stable, bend the pitch down by pouting your bottom lip out slightly, as if it’s an accordion file being opened out and down
Use a constant air stream as you do this!
Once you’ve gotten the hang of this, practice on additional pitches moving chromatically
Now, move to adding in your regular fingerings to slur down one half step and back up, starting with the correct fingerings to hear the half step first, then continuing the slur, and then pitch bending down and back up - use the sound of the first normal fingering note as a guide for your ear.

This is a great starting point in your warm up before we move to LIP SLURS! You want to use this same bending motion when you move to lip slurs.
