In December 1948, an unidentified man was found dead on Somerton Beach near Adelaide, Australia. Despite an extensive investigation, police could not determine his identity.

All labels had been removed from his clothing, he carried no identification, and there were no obvious signs of violence. The autopsy suggested possible poisoning, but no clear cause of death was ever confirmed.

The most mysterious clue was found hidden in a small pocket inside his trousers: a scrap of paper reading “Tamám Shud”, a Persian phrase meaning “It is finished.” The phrase was traced back to a rare copy of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Months later, police located the exact book in a nearby car — with the final page torn out and strange code-like letters written inside.

For decades, the case fueled theories involving espionage, secret codes, and Cold War intelligence. In 2022, modern DNA analysis strongly suggested the man was Carl “Charles” Webb, an electrical engineer from Melbourne. However, many questions remain unanswered — including how he died and why so much effort was made to conceal his identity.

The Somerton Man case remains one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in criminal history.
