TRANSPOSING ART-THEMED PROGRAMME ONTO HISTORICALLY-RICH PRIVATE SPACE

Since British rule, Tanjong Pagar Railway Station is known for its rich heritage and legacy of being Singapore’s main pit stop for people returning from Malaysia. As it is due for renovation, the normally-out-of bounds privatised heritage site is opened for public access on selected public holidays. In this instance, it was opened to accommodate an arts market, bringing local artists’ and the general public together on an evening of mutual appreciation in the ambience of music by local musicians with the city in the backdrop.

This series of videos are part of a study of existing Carnivalesque scenarios within the urban context of Singapore, where creative spatial ownership & reinterpretation of public space is inherent. This thesis serves to introduce Carnivalesque participation & collaboration in the establishment of public space, which can then be creatively reinterpreted, reimagined & reproduced in an excitingly chaotic yet controlled manner.
