STORYLINE:
Military veterans and retired police officers took to the streets of Bogota on Wednesday to protest security reforms initiated by Colombian President Gustavo Petro's government.

The rally also coincided with Colombia's annual Day of the Heroes to commemorate officers killed in action.

Former service personnel have staged continuous demos since Petro took office, saying they want the president to change his stance on negotiations with and management of armed rebel groups.

The protest was held as President Gustavo Petro works on a peace plan which aims to reach a cease-fire with the National Liberation Army (ELN), the last standing guerrilla organization in Colombia.

In June, the government and the rebel group agreed to a six-month ceasefire.

The communist-inspired military force remained active after the dissolution in 2017 of the FARC, a larger group that spent decades in conflict with the government.

Colombia and the ELN started talks in November, shortly after Petro, an ex-rebel, was elected as Colombia’s first leftist president.

Petro has called the talks a cornerstone of his effort to resolve a conflict that dates back to the 1960s.

Critics say the cease-fire also limits the actions of law enforcement agencies.
