From the rare Del-Rack cd Delta Lady, here is the unedited version of "Ballad for A Soldier" by Asylum Choir. Asylum Choir was Leon Russell and Marc Benno, who had been in The Outcasts in 1966 before moving into Leon's Skyhill Drive home/studio. "Ballad for A Soldier" was one of the last songs recorded for Asylum Choir's second album, simply titled Asylum Choir II. Leon and Marc played all the instruments and did all the vocals, which was done April 3, 1971 at Skyhill Studio.
On the original vinyl release, the song was edited at 3:47 after the last line, "And there are no more ballads for the soldiers, and jumped ahead to add 37 seconds of the instrumental closing, and clocked in at 4 minutes and 24 seconds. When Steve Hoffman was hired to remaster Leon's 1969-1975 releases for compact disc, he compiled a ten track cd with remixes of "extra-long" versions that was put out on the Del-Rack label. In its unedited form “Ballad For A Soldier” was 5 minutes and 50 seconds long, with 2 minutes and 3 seconds of instrumental closing. Both versions end with Leon directing Marc to turn the metronome off.
