The historic district of Zizkov, in Prague-3, was built at the beginning of the last century on the site of vineyards planted by Emperor Charles IV. The population, unlike Vinograd, was originally proletarian, and housing was not prestigious. But in recent years, much has changed: nondescript brick houses are being demolished, modern buildings and shopping centers are growing in their place. It was in the local pubs that Yaroslav Hasek wrote the first chapters of his great novel about the soldier Schweik.
