Funmilayo Ramsome Kuti Movie Review

Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti is a 2024 biopic directed by Tunde Babalola and produced by Bolanle Austen-Peters, which chronicles the life of one of Nigeria's most influential women.
The film begins with a scene of police brutality, where Funmilayo is thrown from a two-storey building while authorities seek information about her son, Fela Kuti. Funmilayo was the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School, but faced resistance from her male peers. Her father encouraged her to pursue education over traditional roles expected of women at the time. After furthering her studies in England, she returned to Nigeria and married Israel Ransome-Kuti, with whom she shared a deep bond despite their differing beliefs.
