Canuck Union Lines: N Scale Model Railway Kato CNW 400 and new stock

A look at some recent purchases for my N Scale model Railway, including some demonstration runs!


I'm an avid collector of new things to run on my N Scale Model Railroad. In my recent trip to Canada and the USA (se my recent videos!) I made a special effort to visit Central Hobbies in Vancouver BC.


At Cantral Hobies I bought a GMD-1a n scale locomotive by Rapido Inc. This is fitted with DCC and Sound. If you have one or are thinking of getting one, try out the functions in the low 20s. You'll be surprised at what you hear - the guys at Rapido have a sense of humour! I also bought a few new freight cars, a passenger car and some road vehicles.


Kato USA have recently released two new n scale trains: the El Capitan hi-level cars in Santa Fe colours and the Chicago North Western 400.


The El Capitan set includes ten passenger cars plus a selction of Unitrak for display purposes. I'll be using mine on a future layout. I also got the set of two add-on cards to go with the El Capitan giving me a 12 car train. Add on some Kato Super Chief cars and you have a realistic combined El Capitan / Super Chief as run by the Santa Fe in the 1960s.


The CNWRR 400 is a full train presented in a Kato Bookcase package. It consists of five correctly painted Bi-level cars plus an E8. I chose to get the E8 factory fitted with DCC and Loksound by Kato's Kobo Shops. Remember these are the 400 bi-level cars and not commuter cars.
