The history of China's aircraft carrier fleet is a history of big plans and tireless movement. This history began in the 1980s, when the decommissioned Australian aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne arrived in the country, either by chance or on purpose. The PLA Navy studied the ship and gained important knowledge, but did not rush to reproduce it. They continued to study the topic, trying to get any useful information from around the world.

In the 1990s, they were able to buy several Soviet ships: the heavy aircraft carriers Minsk, Kyiv and Varyag. And while the first two remained in the civilian sector, Varyag was completed as a full-fledged aircraft carrier and joined the PLA Navy under the name Liaoning.

Later, based on the Liaoning experience, the Chinese were able to reproduce all the technologies and build a new ship completely from scratch - this is how Shandong appeared. But they did not stop there and continued development, first building a seriously updated Fujian, and now, in the 2020s, starting construction of a top world-class ship. Project 004 does not yet have a name, but, apparently, will be able to fully compete with the most powerful aircraft carriers in the world - the modern flagships of the US Navy.
