Excerpt: Chapter 1 – The First Encounter
Max scurried across the dusty barn floor, his tiny paws making barely a whisper of sound. His whiskers twitched as he sniffed the air, on high alert. The old barn had always been his domain, a kingdom of cheese crumbs and leftover grains. That was until Claw arrived.
Perched on a bale of hay, Claw's amber eyes gleamed with a predatory focus. The black-and-white feline stretched lazily, her claws glinting in the sunlight streaming through the wooden slats.
“I know you’re there, little one,” Claw purred, her voice smooth but laced with menace. “Come out, and maybe I won’t make this painful.”
Max paused behind a wooden crate, his mind racing. He spotted a pile of loose straw nearby and formed a plan. With a flick of his tail, he darted toward the straw, deliberately making noise to bait Claw.
“There you are!” Claw leaped gracefully, landing exactly where Max had been. But the wily mouse was already gone, disappearing into the pile of straw.
“You’ll have to do better than that, whiskers!” Max called out from the safety of a burrow under the floorboards.
Claw growled, her tail lashing. “Oh, I will, rodent. I will.”
