Engage Alpha Gen 4 Paddle Review
Just got these paddles from Engage to review and have to say they impressed me, the Engage Alpha is Engage's first gen 4 paddles, they are releasing 3 series of paddles the Alpha, Alpa Pro and ProFoam series paddles. Today we are looking at the Alpha, which is their Control and Spin paddle but packs a punch. Here are my thoughts:
1. Excellent control & precision
The paddle gives good dwell time (the ball “sticks” slightly) thanks largely to the core + surface combination. This helps with delicate shots, dinks, placement.
2. Strong spin potential
The gritty carbon skin, and core, allow players to generate spin more effectively. This is especially useful on serves, third-shot drops, angle shots.
3. Good stability
The Unibody thermoformed construction, plus the reinforced frame & foam edge barrier, make the Alpha feel solid. Mishits are more forgiving, the face feels consistent. Sweet spot is huge!
4. Balanced power
While not a power paddle, it does give enough pop when you swing through, especially in the 14 mm version, so you can still drive shots when needed.
5. Initial Feel
It’s foam so “honeycommers” may need a few more games to get used to the feel.
6. Weight + swing speed
If your looking fr fast hands I would look at the 14mm, I preferred the power in the 16 but was slower.
7. Cost
This is a premium paddle, at $200 list it’s very competitive. Price reflects the tech, materials, and performance.
The Engage Alpha seems like a strong choice for:
• Intermediate-to-advanced players who want more control and spin still want decent power but not a power paddle
• Players who like shaping shots
Summary
The Engage Alpha is a well-engineered, premium paddle that sits in the “spin + control with power when needed” category. It doesn’t break the mold completely, but it refines a lot of what is good in modern paddles: great face texture, well-balanced core, durable build, and the flexibility of two thicknesses. If your game relies on finesse, placement, shot shaping, and you want tools to help with that (spin, control, stable mishit behavior), it’s a very strong option.
