How to Make a Mask: Step-by-Step Guide

✂️Materials Needed:
Dollar store hat (or make one with aluminum foil and tape or it could be an old 🧢 , be resourceful)
Scissors
Masking tape
Duct tape
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Markers
Cardboard rolls (from paper towels)
Flexible cardboard (like from a cereal box)
Acrylic paints and guesso
Acrylic sealer or Mod Podge
Brown fake hair (from an old wig)
Photo references
Newspaper and Kitchen Towel Paper (I recommend Bounty Brand, other brands wont be as strong and they will not hold)
PVA glue and water (or paper mache mix/flour)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Hat Base
Option 1: Use a whole hat if it fits your head well.
Option 2: Cut the hat in half if it’s too small. Use aluminum foil and tape to create an extension that fits better and covers more of the back of the neck and sides. Secure the foil with hot glue and reinforce with duct tape.

2. Create the Mouth-Nose Structure
Take the cardboard rolls and add them to the center of the hat to form the long nose/mouth structure.
Split the roll and attach one side to each side of the hat to create a triangular shape at the front. Glue everything securely with hot glue.

3. Shape the Face
Once you have the triangular skeleton, start adding aluminum foil to mold the shape of Adam’s face. Use photo references to guide you.
Add volume to the sides and underneath with aluminum foil, securing it with glue and tape. Once satisfied with the shape, mark and cut out the eyes, adjusting as necessary. Cover everything in masking tape.

4. Add Jaw Structure
Use a strip of flexible cardboard to create the jawline, adding masking tape for support. Glue the sides with hot glue, ensuring a good fit.

5. Create Spiky Flesh Top
Use aluminum foil to create spiky flesh on top of the head. Attach and secure with masking tape.

6. Apply Paper Mache
Cut newspaper strips and prepare your PVA glue or paper mache mix. Start dipping the newspaper, removing excess glue, and cover the entire mask.
Apply at least three layers, allowing for drying time between layers. Optionally, cover with split paper towel layers for a textured, skin-like finish.

7. Prepare for Painting
Once everything is completely dry, coat the mask in gesso or white acrylic paint.

8. Add Ears
Create ears using aluminum foil, cover them with paper, let them dry, and attach them to the sides of the mask with hot glue. ( you can do this step earlier in the process, befire painting)

9. Paint the Mask
Mix or purchase skin-tone paints and paint the entire mask, adding shadows and details as desired, including the jaw and lips.

10. Create Finger Eyes
Form small balls with aluminum foil for eyes, cover them with paper towels and glue, let them dry, then paint them. They fit perfectly on the fingers.

11.Attach Hair
Use an old wig, cut it, and attach it to the mask with hot glue.

12.Finish the Mask
Glue black fabric or mesh to the inside of the eye holes to prevent visibility from the outside.

13. Final Touches
Review and make any final adjustments to your mask. You can still add or adjust and repaint. Check the fit and adjust as your liking.

Your Adam Maitland mask is now complete!
