The Queen of the Lakes making her third Duluth departure of the season on May 7th, 2024! Splashing her way out in style with a thunderstorm behind her and a heavy east wind in front of her, the two clashing weather systems made for some very interesting waves and a fantastic backdrop for her departure!

The 1,014 foot ship is the world’s largest freshwater vessel by physical size, capable of carrying 71,000 tons of cargo, or roughly 3,000 semi truck loads. Built in 1981 she makes regular trips to Duluth on a near weekly basis, hauling coal and iron ore to Detroit. She missed nearly 2 months of this season due to extensive work on her ballast tanks and their support structures, but she’s been busy making up for the lost time since then!
