After the Turkman Gate, Faiz-e-Ilahi Masjid Barat Ghar, and the dispensary, now the bulldozer Action is ready for the Jama Masjid Encroachment. A major anti-encroachment drive in Delhi has turned tense. Early Wednesday morning, violence erupted near Ramlila Maidan at Turkman Gate during an operation to remove illegal encroachments close to the Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque and adjoining graveyard. During the drive, locals and alleged outsiders reportedly pelted stones at Delhi Police and MCD officials, injuring five police personnel. To control the situation, police had to use tear gas shells.
Following the incident, 11 people have been arrested so far, while around 30 individuals have been identified. Police are examining more than 400 video clips related to the violence to identify all those involved.
This incident comes at a time when the Delhi High Court has taken a strict stand on encroachments outside the historic Jama Masjid. The court has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to conduct a detailed survey within two months and remove all illegal encroachments from the Jama Masjid road, surrounding areas, and even the mosque steps.
After the Turkman Gate action, it is being widely believed that a similar bulldozer drive may soon take place outside Jama Masjid as well. The issue has now become not just an administrative matter, but a serious law-and-order challenge for the authorities in Old Delhi.
