I’m a firm believer that the procedure allows you to be fair and in being fair, that doesn’t mean that you can’t take action.

So if you have a reasonable belief that someone is flaunting the system, then I believe that the procedure allows you to speak to them about it and also to say that we have concerns about your performance, you conduct, your attendance or whatever it may be; and to almost call them out about it and say that we are aware that this is going on.

Now it could be that they’re quite covert, that they seem to know and understand the procedures. However, the procedures are there to support the business as much as the employee.

So I think as a manager, if you pro-actively manage then that stops people taking advantage of the system.
