The Wall Street Journal reported that the United States has for months been assisting Ukraine in conducting long-range strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, in what officials describe as a coordinated effort to compel President Vladimir Putin to negotiate.

The revelation comes as US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy concluded their second phone conversation in two days. A Ukrainian official stressed that Moscow is using diplomatic cover provided by the Gaza ceasefire agreement to intensify its own attacks.

Washington's previously undisclosed support, which expanded significantly this summer, has enabled Kyiv to target refineries and energy hubs deep inside Russian territory. These strikes have driven up domestic energy prices in Russia and forced Moscow to restrict diesel exports while beginning to import fuel.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has called the potential US transfer of Tomahawk cruise missiles—a subject discussed by the two presidents—a matter of "extreme concern," warning that tensions are escalating. President Trump had previously stated he had "sort of made a decision" regarding providing the long-range missiles to Ukraine.

The ongoing US assistance represents a calculated escalation in the conflict, aligning military support with a clear strategic objective: using economic pressure to alter the Kremlin's calculus.
