Let's start with, what is Semana Santa? (Easter Spain) the best celebration in seville.

Semana Santa is celebrated all over Spain and in Seville, it has been celebrated since 16th century. In fact, it has been declared a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest.
During this week, vast number of people are gathered together to witness majestic processions from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday which are organised by Seville’s church brotherhoods to commemorate the journey of Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. This event highlights not just the spiritual emotions but as well as the cultural emotions while enjoying and admiring the works of art in the streets of Seville. It is a celebration that religious brotherhood spend all year preparing for that is why this is something that i guarantee you won't see anything like it anywhere else.

The week consists of processions in which huge floats of religious statues which we called pasos are carried on the shoulders of the team costaleros around the streets of Seville and there are 30 to 40 of them depends on the brotherhood. They are under the Paso and they don’t have outside vision and they are guided by what we called the Capataz who is in charge of giving instructions to them when they should carry the paso, walk or rest.
The pasos are decorated with flowers, candles and other ornaments which usually weigh more than 1000 to 2000 kilos or more and they are followed by Nazarenos whose faces are covered and most of them are barefooted as a sign of penitence. The people involve in the processions with the pasos are performing an act of penance for their sins.

Each brotherhood has their own established route of procession but all of them will pass to the so-called official section which starts from Calle Campana Street up to the Cathedral and returns to their own church on a different route and this can last up to 12 hours. And before the processions start, thousands of people are already waiting outside and the whole street will be so crowded. And most of them have already waited for long hours just to see the pasos as close as they can.

Some processions are silent like the el gran poder while others are filled with a passionate music. There is a band which is made of large number musicians who played typical Easter music in which the costaleros will use to move the pasos into to the rhythm of the music. Weather silent or with music, both will amazed you. You will feel the solemnity from the silent processions while those with music is an overflowing emotion.

This is the most fantastic time to be in the city and you can enjoy this celebration in different ways.
