​Where else would you want to be? Honestly. Today, we are out on Chinaman’s Reef, which sits right off the coast of the Daintree Rainforest. This is the only place on the planet where the rainforest meets the reef. Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef while looking back at the ancient mountains of the Daintree is an experience that’s hard to put into words.
​In this video, I’m taking you on a "Live Drift Snorkel" to show you exactly what a day out with Wavelength Reef Cruises in Port Douglas looks like. I’ve filmed and edited this intentionally to give you a realistic, unedited version of the experience. If you are planning a trip to Far North Queensland and trying to decide which reef company to book with, I want to show you the real deal: clear water, live boat pickups, and the actual conditions you can expect on a primo day.
​What is a Drift Snorkel?
You’ll see how our skipper, Jon, and the guides (Markus, Ginger, and Lamea) execute a "live drop." We split into small groups for safety, enter the water while the boat is moving slightly, and let the current do the work. It is the most relaxing way to experience the reef because you aren’t fighting the water; you’re just floating over the corals as the boat drifts alongside you.
​Marine Life Encounters
The visibility today was around 20-25 meters—absolutely sweet. We encountered a very friendly Green Sea Turtle that just wanted to hang around, caught a glimpse of a Tawny Nurse Shark, and even had a White Tip Reef Shark cruise by. Check out the healthy hard and soft corals, including some beautiful Pocillopora and Junceella sea whips down the wall.
