A commuter train collided with a construction crane in southeastern Spain on Thursday near the port city of Cartagena, marking the country’s fourth rail incident in less than a week, according to emergency services.
Authorities said several passengers suffered minor injuries, but confirmed the train did not derail or overturn. Rail traffic on the affected line in the Murcia region was temporarily disrupted before later resuming. Spain’s rail operator Adif described the incident as an “intrusion into the infrastructure gauge” by a crane not linked to railway operations.
The collision comes as Spain remains shaken by a deadly high-speed train crash in Andalusia that killed at least 43 people, followed days later by a derailment near Barcelona caused by heavy rain, which killed a driver and seriously injured passengers. A further collision in Catalonia prompted the country’s main train drivers’ union to call a nationwide strike over safety concerns.
