A leading member of the 'Ndrangheta Mafia, considered one of Italy's most dangerous fugitives, was arrested after more than six years on the run. Marcello Pesce, known as "U ballerinu" (translated as "The dancer") was said to be the leader of the Pesce clan, one of the 'Ndrangheta's powerful families in the southern Italian region of Calabria. He was sentenced in absentia to 16 years in prison for Mafia crimes. With him in his home were a startling cache of sophisticated reading material, showing him to be erudite and remarkably well-read. Books included works by French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre; French novelist Marcel Proust; Chilean novelist Roberto Bolaño’s “The Savage Detectives”; and a folio by 16th Century Italian writer Girolamo Muzio.
Two other men were arrested for helping him hide.
"Today is a good day for Italy: a dangerous fugitive, wanted internationally for six years, has been brought to justice," Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said in a statement.
Pesce was roused from his bed in the night and captured in his home town of Rosarno, in Calabria. "I know you, I have seen you on TV," he said to one of the officers who burst into his room.
