In a global economy that depends heavily on the sea routes of the Indian Ocean, India and Malaysia are moving rapidly closer to each other. Around 2.7 million people of Indian origin work in Malaysia, which makes this relationship directly linked to employment, livelihoods, and security. This is why Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Malaysia was significant, during which 11 formal agreements and 16 key areas of cooperation were finalized—covering defence, semiconductors, healthcare, and food security.

The Strait of Malacca is India’s lifeline, as most of India’s maritime trade and oil imports pass through this route. That is why maritime security and intelligence sharing between the two countries are crucial. On terrorism, both nations have a clear and firm stand—if any threat emerges from a third country or a terrorist organisation, there will be strong action without pressure or compromise.

In technology, Malaysia is a major hub for semiconductor manufacturing, while India has strong capabilities in chip design. At the same time, the UPI–DuitNow linkage will make mobile payments easier without relying on the US dollar. Overall, India–Malaysia ties are not just about friendship, but a strategic necessity connected to security, technology, and jobs.
