There was once a herd of elephants,
elephants young, elephants old and, elephants tall, or fat or thin
elephants like this, that or the other, all different but all
happy and all the same colour, except Elmer.

See Elmer was different. Elmer was patchwork.
And if you listen up, I'll tell you how that worked.
Elmer was yellow and orange and red,
pink and purple, blue and then,
green and black and white. Like no other.
Elmer was not elephant colour.

But it was Elmer who kept the elephants happy.
Sometimes he joked like a proper cheeky chappy.
And sometimes they joked with him.
But, whenever there was a smile, usually Elmer started it.

One night Elmer couldn’t sleep for thinking, and the think that he was thinking made him weep.
“Whoever heard of a patchwork elephant?”
“No wonder they laugh at me”.
Then, in the morning before they were awake, Elmer slipped quietly away.

And, what's sad is, he didn't see that being different is what made him unique.
