Carotid bruit - causes, pathophysiology, sign value

Описание к видео Carotid bruit - causes, pathophysiology, sign value

A carotid bruit is a sound heard over the carotid artery in the neck that may indicate a partial blockage or narrowing of the artery. The carotid arteries are located on each side of the neck and supply blood to the brain.

When the blood flow through the carotid artery is obstructed or reduced, turbulence can occur, causing a swishing or whooshing sound, which is called a bruit. The presence of a carotid bruit may indicate an increased risk of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) because it may be a sign of atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of plaque in the artery.

If a carotid bruit is detected during a physical exam, further testing such as a carotid ultrasound or CT angiography may be ordered to evaluate the extent of the blockage and determine the appropriate treatment. Treatment options may include medication, lifestyle changes, or surgery to remove the plaque and restore blood flow.
