If your dog has anxiety and you’re having trouble working through this behavior, pay super close attention to this video!⁣

The key to working through anxiety is keeping your dog’s mind PRESENT with you. In a perfect world, your dog is mentally present with you, asking you what to do next & NOT thinking ahead to the future (Even my own anxiety is triggered by overthinking the future)!⁣
⁣
Therefore, as dog owners, we need to train our dogs to stay present in order to work through any type of anxiety.⁣
⁣
How do you do this?⁣
⁣
The biggest mistake people make with dogs who have anxiety is they continue to move forward & succumb to their dog’s anxious mind (i.e. going out the door when your dog’s mind is already out the door). If you do this, the anxiety is leading the process! You need to stop & bring your dog’s mind back to you before moving forward.⁣
⁣
The amount of time this takes depends on the level of anxiety & stubbornness of your dog to get out of her own mind. In this case, it took us over an hour to get out the door but that amount of time continued to decrease the more we practiced throughout the board & train program.⁣
⁣
When your dog’s mind is thinking ahead, shifting your dog’s mind off of what it is stuck on by using commands to throw off the normal routine is the best way to help a dog stay present!⁣
⁣
In this video, the dog had a very high level of reactivity toward other dogs & her anxiety started when the leash was brought out. Her mind was already out the door before the leash was even on her, which is where you need to STOP.⁣
⁣
To help her stay present, we made grabbing the leash = a mix of “go to your bed”, puppy push-ups, going back into the crate on command and waiting to come out until she was no longer thinking about going out.⁣
⁣
Once her mind was present, then we put the leash on.⁣
⁣
As long as she stayed present once putting the leash on, we repeated the whole process to ensure she was present again before physically moving out the door.⁣
⁣
This process ensures a clean slate when we get outside & gives the dog a chance to actually work through the trigger without her mind taking over!⁣
