RIRS stands for Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery. It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat kidney stones, tumors, and other abnormalities within the kidney.
How the Procedure is Performed:
The surgery is performed without any external incisions. A urologist uses a thin, flexible tube called a ureteroscope, which has a camera at its tip. This scope is inserted through the body's natural urinary tract—specifically, through the urethra, into the bladder, and then up the ureter to the kidney.
Once the ureteroscope reaches the stone, a laser fiber (usually a Holmium laser) is passed through it. The laser is used to break the kidney stone into tiny fragments or "dust," which can then be passed out of the body in the urine. In some cases, a small basket is used to retrieve larger fragments.
