Sludge Dewatering:
It is the physical unit operation used to reduce the moisture content of the digested sludge
Increase the solid concentration
Objectives of Dewatering:
Reduce Volume hence cost of transportation to ultimate disposal site is reduced
Easy to handle dewatered sludge
Increase calorific value ( heat produced by the complete combustion of fuel unit joules per kilogram) prior to incineration
Make sludge odour free, non putrescible
Required before landfilling to reduce leachate formation
Methods used for Dewatering:
Air drying in sludge drying bed ( SDB)
Vacuum filtration
Centrifugation
Pressure Filtration
Sludge Drying Bed (SDB):
The purpose of a sludge drying bed is to reduce the moisture content of digested sludge by draining and evaporating liquid through solar radiation and air evaporation.
Suitable for warmer, sunny regions like India.
It consist of a bottom layer of gravel of uniform size over which is laid a clean layer of sand ( 15 to 30 cm)
Open jointed underdrains are laid in the gravel layer to provide positive drainage as the liquid passes through the sand and gravel layer
Size of Sludge drying bed: 6 to 8 m wide 30 to 45 m long with bed slope 0.5%
For flexibility in operation minimum 2 drying beds are required
Digested sludge : not more than 20 cm depth is applied to sludge drying bed.
Dissolved gases gets to buoy up and float the solids and leaving clear liquid at bottom which drains through sand and gravel layer
Major liquid drains within few hours after which drying commences by evaporation
Within 2 to 3 weeks the solid cake known as sludge cake is formed & 20 to 40 % volume reduction takes place.
Sludge cake is removed by shovel or fork and transported by trucks or wheel barrows
