Paradise At Heron Island In Great Barrier Reef

Looking for new places to visit in Australia? We visited the amazing Heron Island in Southern Great Barrier Reef and it's literally like being in the Maldives!

Heron Island is situated two hours by ferry from the regional city of Gladstone. It's a 5.5hr drive from Brisbane to get to Gladstone and then an easy two hour boat journey to Heron Island.

Heron Island is a relatively cheaper Great Barrier Reef to visit. We paid $300 between two to spend the night here. With some of the world's best diving and snorkelling, it's also a conservation island home to a bird sanctuary and hundreds of turtles who make their way from Solomon Islands to hatch.

We saw about five turtles hatch on the island and even two outside of our room during our stay. It was an amazing experience to watch the turtle come out of the ocean to lay their eggs in the Great Barrier Reef. We saw snorkel with turtles in Australia, and snorkel with sharks too!

Although we only spent one night on Heron Island, we honestly felt like we had gone to another country. It felt so far away from Australia, so if you're looking to holiday in Australia, make sure you go to Heron Island.
