The CAA 2019 was passed by the Indian parliament on 11 December 2019 providing Indian citizenship to the religious minorities belonging to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Paris, and Christians who fled to India before December 2014 because of religious persecution from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
Since the passing of this act, there were protests in different parts of India as it violated the basic features of the Indian Constitution.
First, a massive protest came up from North-Eastern India particularly from Assam and Tripura as according to them the enforcing of this act will alter the demography and culture and traditions of these regions. In short, it directly threatens the identity of the indigenous people of these regions as the majority of the so-called persecuted minorities concentrated here in these regions for the past 50 years. The slogan here is that they don’t want to be the dumping ground of illegal foreigners regardless of Hindu or Muslim or whosoever.
To the rest of India, the main reason for the protest against CAA 2019 is because of the non-inclusion of Muslims thereby awarding citizenship based on the religion which altered and violates the basic features of the constitution. Not only the ACT promotes the religious divides it also broke the very foundation of the ‘idea of India’. Therefore, this particular ACT should be no to be enforced.
On 13 December 2019, students of the prestigious University of Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi organized a peaceful march to the Indian parliament against passing the CAA. However, Delhi Police dispersed the marched using tear gas and stone-pelting from the student’s side. On the following day, things come to normal at the University.
On 15th December 2019, some unknown miscreants clash with police nearby the university involving burning down of state buses. On the pretext of chasing down those unknown miscreants, police entered the university campus without the permission of the university authority brutally cracked down the university brutally and inhumanly. Police entered the library, firing tear gas and suffocating the students, lathi charges to whoever they found in the university, even the university security guards were not spared(university security guards are Indian army ex-servicemen) broke university properties, assaulted and arrested more 200 students. More than 300 students were injured in the incident. The 15th December 2019 cracked down on the university causes mayhem in the academic atmosphere of the university, the ongoing exam was postponed, hostellers were asked to leave the hostel till further notice. Later on, the university authority issued an order that the university will be closed till 5th January 2020.
From the following day of 15th December 2019, students of the university continuously stage peaceful protests outside the university main gate in the form of public speaking, dharna, and hunger strike till today.
