An 18-hour ordeal at Shanghai airport has triggered a major diplomatic confrontation between India and China. Pema Wang Thongdok, an Indian woman from Arunachal Pradesh, was detained, questioned, mocked, and denied transit clearance after Chinese immigration officials declared her Indian passport “invalid” because her birthplace was Arunachal Pradesh, territory Beijing falsely claims as its own. India lodged a strong demarche in Beijing and New Delhi the same day, calling the detention “ludicrous, unacceptable, and provocative.” The Indian Consulate in Shanghai intervened urgently to rescue the stranded traveller. New Delhi said China’s conduct violated international civil aviation norms and undermined efforts to stabilise bilateral ties. This shocking incident raises serious questions: Is China weaponising transit harassment to push territorial claims? And how should India respond when sovereignty is challenged at an airport terminal?
