STORYLINE

The Philippine government warned that police will crack down on unauthorised or unruly protest rallies seeking the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

A noisy protest took place in Manila, on Wednesday, as opposition groups marked the 33rd anniversary of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos' declaration of martial law.

Demonstrators held placards calling on Arroyo to resign and chanted "Oust Gloria!".

Earlier this month the Philippine House of Representatives threw out all three impeachment charges against President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

The vote-rigging accusations against Arroyo emerged in June, based on illegal wiretaps in which she purportedly discussed with an elections commissioner how to ensure a million-vote victory in the closely fought May 2004 election.

Opposition groups claim the defeat of the impeachment bid did not clear Arroyo.

They accuse pro-Arroyo lawmakers of suppressing the presentation of evidence against her.

Renato Reyes, spokesman for the left-wing New Patriotic Alliance said the opposition is still demanding Arroyo's resignation, saying "Enough is Enough".

The 17,000-strong police force in metropolitan Manila was put on alert, and police officials said officers would be deployed at shopping malls, hotels, airports, train stations, bus terminals and other potential targets of terrorists who might take advantage of the protests.

The Coalition for Truth, a broad alliance of opposition parties and left-wing groups have traditionally marked the anniversary of the Sept. 21, 1972, martial law declaration by former President Marcos as the beginning of the resistance to his dictatorship.
