Networks of Anger

As in the days of deed propaganda, Anarchism was taken over by its old demons in the early 1970s. Tempted for a time to return to armed violence, she was inspired by the strategy of the Tupamaros in Uruguay to extend a new form of armed struggle to all major Western metropolises: the urban guerrilla.
Action groups sprang up everywhere: the Angry Brigade in the UK, the Bewegung 2. Juni in West Germany, Action Directe in France, the Weather Underground in the US, all names that shook the world again. And with them, the name Anarchism is again synonymous with disorder and chaos.

It was all the more frightening because at the same time the punk movement was conquering the international scene and waging a veritable cultural guerrilla war against the music industry and the establishment in general. While it has contributed to the popularization of slogans, symbols and even libertarian practices among a new generation, it has also suffered fully from the general repression that fell on the revolutionary movement everywhere at the turn of the 1980s.
From then on, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the triumph of Neoliberalism, anarchists had no choice but to resort to anonymity and come forward in masks.
And so, with the EZLN and Subcomandante Marcos in Mexico, at the heart of the Black Bloc that defeated the G7 in Seattle in 1999, or within the Indignants movement that stretched from Madrid to New York and from Tel Aviv to Buenos Aires, around the year 2000, Anarchism inspired all new forms of resistance, without us really knowing it.

But it is indeed Anarchism that, from the rebellious districts of Athens to Rojava and from the ZAD of Notre Dame des Landes to the heart of the last great social mobilizations, today embodies the ultimate critique of Capitalism and is thus for every power is the real enemy.
