Brass, bronze and steel are alloys. An alloy is a combination of a metal with at least one other metal or nonmetal. Compared to pure metals, alloys have many advantages such as better corrosion resistance, lower cost, greater strength and better workability.

Brass is mixture of copper and zinc. Although proportions of copper and zinc can be varied to achieve different colors, and mechanical, electrical, acoustic, and chemical properties, copper typically has the larger proportion. Brass is stronger and stiffer than pure copper. Also brass has a similar appearance to gold and is available in a variety of shades. It’s often used for decorative and architectural elements. Additionally, the workability and machinability of the material lend it to use in the manufacture of parts for plumbing, electronics, and musical instruments.

Bronze is mixture of copper and up to 12% tin. It has excellent thermal conductivity, resistance to saltwater corrosion, and High ductility. It’s used for automobile parts, electrical connectors and springs, and in marine applications, such as propellers and boat or ship fittings. Bronze is also used for petrochemical tools and oil rig components that require non-sparking metals.

Steel is mixture of iron and up to 2.14% carbon. Stainless steel, which is resistant to corrosion and oxidation, typically also contains 11% chromium. As you know probably know, steel is lighter, harder and stronger than iron.

A molten metal may not always mix with another element. For example, pure iron is almost completely insoluble in copper. Even when the metals are soluble, each will usually have a saturation point, beyond which no more of the metal can be added. Iron, for example, can hold a maximum of 6.67% carbon.

Today, a huge variety of alloys is produced to satisfy all our technological needs. For example in the case of bronze, aluminum bronze has good abrasion resistance, nickel aluminum bronze is highly great flexible, tin bronze is highly castable, manganese bronze is very strong, and lead tin bronze can be made at low cost.
