Juneau, Alaska | Dog Sled Summer Camp Shore Excursion - Visiting the Alaskan Huskies of the Iditarod

It's a cool autumn day in Juneau, Alaska as we set up the mountains to visit Sheep Creek Dog Summer Camp. 700 feet up the mountains, within Sheep Creek Valley, is a camp of dogs training to be sled dogs for the renowned Iditarod sled race. One of the more popular shore excursions for Alaskan cruises, you'll check in at the dock when you first disembark your ship. From there, it's about a 20-minute drive up a bumpy mountain road, along Juneau's Gastineau Channel, where you'll get to take in some of Alaska's mountainous landscape.

Once you reach camp, you'll be greeted by the chaos of 200 excited, barking dogs that upon seeing your bus, know they're about to go for a run. You won't meet them right away though, with the first part of your visit dedicated to a tour of camp and some background about the Iditarod, dog training, and mushing in general. Afterwards, you'll get some quality time with teams of Alaskan huskies, but it should be noted that these aren't the typical white huskies you may be familiar with. These huskies are bred for speed and power, and not aesthetics. All the same, they're still the goodest of bois.

The ride itself is not a sled, but a wheeled cart. The dogs will take you on a round trip from camp in a simulation of sled racing. You'll have some opportunity give commands yourself and learn more about the racing process itself. At the end, you also get some quality time with husky puppies.

Note that this is a great shore excursion tour for kids too. All the dogs are leashed and friendly. However, they don't have much in the way of manners. They are loud and will bark in your face when they get too excited. They'll also jump up on you for pets, and often have muddy paws.
