Determining suitability for Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) hip replacement involves careful consideration of several factors. Ideal candidates typically include individuals with hip arthritis who meet specific criteria.

Maintaining a Body Mass Index (BMI) below 35 is generally recommended. For obese patients, DAA can increase the risk of complications. A patient should also have no prior history of hip surgery. DAA is not preferred for those with fractures, plates, or rods in the hip region, nor is it recommended for patients who have previously undergone hip replacement surgery.

While DAA offers advantages, it's essential to understand that Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) from a posterior approach may be more suitable in certain cases. The severity of hip damage plays a crucial role in determining the appropriate surgical technique. If the joint is significantly damaged but the bone structure remains relatively intact, DAA is often preferred.

However, for patients with special conditions such as Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) or septic arthritis, MIS through a posterior approach is generally recommended. These conditions often require more extensive surgical access, which the posterior approach facilitates.
