Lijden vissen pijn?

Daarover gaat het derde deel van ons vierdelige interview met de wereldberoemde marien bioloog Daniel Pauly, hoogleraar aan het Instituut voor Oceanen en Visserijen aan de Universiteit van British Columbia, Canada. Wij bevroegen hem over de invloed van menselijke activiteiten op het zeeleven en onze oceanen.

🎓 Over Daniel Pauly:

Daniel Pauly is een van de meest geciteerde visserij-experts ter wereld. Zijn onderzoek naar visserij wereldwijd en de invloed daarvan op het zeeleven en mariene ecosystemen strekt zich uit over tientallen jaren. Naast een groot aantal wetenschappelijke publicaties schreef hij boeken voor een breder publiek en werkte hij mee aan projecten als de FishBase (een online encyclopedie met 30.000 vissoorten en informatie over visserijen).

Hij was de bedenker en oprichter van Sea Around Us, een internationaal onderzoeksproject dat de invloed van visserij op mariene ecosystemen in kaart brengt. In 2023 ontving hij de prestigieuze Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, ook wel de 'Nobelprijs voor het milieu' genoemd.

Eerder leverde Pauly al een bijdrage aan de documentaire 'Sea the Truth', die de Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation in 2010 uitbracht (https://www.ngpf.nl/documentaire-sea-.... Afgelopen najaar (2023) gaf hij een lezing in Naturalis in Leiden, en grepen wij de kans om hem opnieuw te spreken.

🎓 About Daniel Pauly:

Daniel Pauly is one of the most cited fisheries experts in the world. His research on fisheries worldwide and their impact on marine life and ecosystems extends over decades. Apart from a large number of scientific publications, he wrote several books for a broader public and he collaborated on projects such as the FishBase (an online encyclopedia containing information on fisheries and over 30,000 fish species).

He also initiated and leads Sea Around Us, an international research initiative that monitors the impact of fisheries on marine ecosystems. In 2023 he was awarded the prestigious Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, sometimes referred to as the 'Nobel Prize for the Environment'.

Earlier, Daniel Pauly contributed to the documentary 'Sea the Truth', which was published by the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation in 2010. Autumn 2023 he visited the Netherlands to deliver a lecture at Naturalis Biodiversity Center and we grasped the opportunity to interview him once more.
