Types of cholesterol
Cholesterol travels through the blood in form of lipoprotein They are of 2 types.
high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol
low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.
HDL = high cholesterol-to-protein ratio= good cholesterol
helps in removal of excess of cholesterol thus protects against heart disease.
LDL= bad cholesterol. It can clog arteries by making plaque and making them less flexible this causes atherosclerosis. Blood doesn’t flow as well through stiff arteries leading to heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes.
Thyroid hormones t3 and t4 which regulates a lipoprotein metabolism .
T3, helps the liver to process and remove excess cholesterol
Thyroid hormones helps in
(HMG-CoA) reductase, which is the first step in cholesterol biosynthesis.
(T3) upregulates LDL receptors by controlling the LDL receptor gene activation.
T3 prevents oxidation of LDL
IT influence HDL metabolism by increasing cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) activity
It stimulate the lipoprotein lipase (LPL), which catabolizes the TG-rich lipoproteins
It influence adipocyte fat cell metabolism
In hypothyroidism liver cannot process as much cholesterol as usual. This can lead to high levels of LDL and total cholesterol.

Thyroid hormone levels don’t have to be very low to increase cholesterol.

Statin medicine is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation.
