How to retain best talent?

Over the past 20 years, I have met quite a few of C and D level players, a decent number of B's, but not that many A level performers. They are rare and in some businesses, even industries, a dying breed. Having said that, when you get an opportunity to work with a top level talent do what you can to retain them as long as possible. This time will not last forever as they will always leave to either another organization or to start their own business...it's in their nature to continue to be challenged.
Finally, are YOU perhaps the top talent where you currently work and if so how are you being treated and where will you be next year?
