Discription :- The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has been actively developing modern fish markets to enhance facilities for vendors and consumers. One notable project is the fish market on Loop Road in Pattinapakkam, constructed over an area of 4,644.68 square meters. This market features 360 stalls, each measuring 2 meters by 1.5 meters, providing vendors with designated spaces to conduct their business.

Another significant development is the fish market at Kasimedu, also known as the Royapuram fishing harbour. This harbour is a major fishing ground in Chennai, accommodating over 1,395 fishing boats. The market within the harbour complex includes 90 stalls offering a variety of seafood, such as seer, pomfret, prawn, shark, sardine, crab, silverbellies, carangids, and mackerel. The harbour attracts nearly 30,000 visitors daily, with approximately 200 tonnes of fish handled each day.

In addition to these, the GCC has plans for new fish markets in other areas. For instance, a modern fish market is planned for Chintadripet at an estimated cost of ₹2.19 crore under the Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative. Similarly, a new fish market is expected to be operational in Kottivakkam by May, aiming to provide better facilities for around 30 fish vendors who currently operate on the roadside. Furthermore, a fish market is planned at Besant Nagar 6th Avenue, which will accommodate 70 stalls and offer amenities such as an elevated vending area, restrooms, LED lighting, and car parking.

These developments are part of the GCC's efforts to modernize fish markets across the city, providing improved infrastructure for vendors and a better shopping experience for consumers.
