Part (i)
Mount Meru, as explained in the Buddhist Abhidharma literature, is at the center of a Buddhist world system surrounded by four continents and eight subcontinents. The mountain has four distance sides, each composed of a single precious substance, commonly said to be ruby, crystal, blur sapphire, etc. Its height is 80,000 yojana high. Mount Meru is instructed in a four-terraced ledge. The first terrace constitutes the abode of the god of vessel bearers, second is the garland bearers, on the third terrace of Mount Meru is the gods of the ever intoxicated class of deity, and the fourth terrace constitutes the heaven of the Four Great Kings, who guard the four cardinal directions
Part (ii)
The Four Great Kings are
1. Dhritarashtra "watcher of lands" king of the East. White in color, holding a lute. King of the Gandharvas (celestial musicians). Can overcome the problems related with Gandharvas and accomplishes peaceful activities.
2. Virudhaka 'Noble Birth' king of the South. Blue in color and holding a sword king of the Kushmandas Can overcome the problems related with Kushmanda and accomplishes the wrathful activities.
3. Virupaksha 'ugly eyes' king of the West. Red in color and holding a stupa and snake lasso king of the Nagas Can overcome the problems related with Naga and accomplishes the Magnetizing activities.
4. Vaishravana 'son of he who has heard many things' king of the North. Yellow in color and holding a victory banner and Mongoose vomiting jewel. King of the Yakshas Can overcome the problems related with Yakshas and accomplishes the enrichment activities.
Part (iii)
Their Brief common Biography
As it is state in the vinaya scripture: As a result of wishes made during the time of the previous Buddha Kashyapa the four guardian kings were reborn in the time of Shakya Muni Buddha to uphold the Dharma. They protected Buddha from conception up until he attained final enlightenment. Also they offered Buddha a Begging bowl made of stone during his renunciation, and swore an oath of protection before Buddha Shakyamuni to protect the holy Dharma and all who uphold the Buddha's teaching. While Buddha was giving teachings on the Manjushree root Tantra, he initiated four of them. In one Mandala configuration, also, Vajrapani initiated them into all Secret Mantrayana initiations and as a result, they vowed to protect all the Vajrayana teachings.
Part (iv)
Now their specific Biography.
1. Dhritarashtra merely hearing his name can annihilate all the demonic force and evil spirit. The sound of his violin can pacify all the desires.
2. Virudhaka by merely touching him, all the negative forces of dharma will be shattered. His sword could subdue harm and hatred.
3. Virupaksha by his mere glace he could take away the life force of all enemies and obstacle makers and subjugate them. The snake will pacify ignorance poison. Also, he prevails over negative force grants all wishes.
4. Vaishravana: he was born to father Vaishravana and mother Shreedevi; he married the Naga princess called Pushpashikha. Therefore, he possess the wish fulfilling gems, as a result owns inexhaustible sky treasure.
Especially if you are doing retreat in solitude, if you make offering and offer praises to this four guardians, then they will not let outer obstacle in and will stop inner accomplishment going out, save guard against harmful interferences, and assist in successful accomplishing our practice.
We place the images of these four guardians at the four directions of the entrance door, writing wishes and prayer and their mantra. Likewise, if you depict them on the walls of the Monasteries and temples, the benefits are state in Sutras repeatedly.
