Gordon Matta-Clark (1943 -1978, New York, NY, US) is one of the most important figures of the New York art scene of the 1970s. With his radical spatial interventions and his concept of art as social practice, he challenged the understanding of architecture and art. His innovative ideas continue to be a source of inspiration for artists and architects alike.

The symposium will provide an in-depth insight into the archival and collection work of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montréal, and the Generali Foundation on the artist. The starting point is the exhibition Out of the Box: Gordon Matta-Clark, which makes previously unpublished material accessible and tests new ways of reading the archives. In addition, two experts will speak about Matta-Clark's influence on movements in art and architecture.

Gordon Matta-Clark (1943 –1978, New York, NY, US) zählt zu den wichtigsten Persönlichkeiten der New Yorker Kunstszene der 1970er-Jahre. Mit seinen radikalen Rauminterventionen und seinem Begriff von Kunst als sozialer Praxis stellte er das Verständnis von Architektur und Kunst in Frage. Seine innovativen Ideen stellen bis heute eine Inspirationsquelle für Künstler_innen wie Architekt_innen dar.

Das Symposium gibt einen vertieften Einblick in die Archiv- und Sammlungsarbeit des Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montréal, und der Generali Foundation zum Künstler. Ausgangspunkt ist die Ausstellung Out of the Box: Gordon Matta-Clark, die bislang unveröffentlichtes Material zugänglich macht und neue Lesarten der Archive erprobt. Darüber hinaus werden zwei Expertinnen über Matta-Clarks Einfluss auf Bewegungen in der Kunst und der Architektur sprechen.
