DMITRY PIROG (RUSSIA) vs DANIEL JACOBS (USA) TKO FIGHT

Ok guys that was a spectacular fight at the middleweight class. Now, this fight between Danny Jacobs and Dmitry Pirog took place in 2010, and it was for the vacant WBO World Middleweight title, which was stripped from Sergio Martinez.

As you can see Pirog was an extremely slippery customer to deal with.

At the time, both boxers were undefeated and this was Pirog's first time fighting in the US. Now it was remarked by the commentators that Pirog trained himself by watching tape of Sugar Ray Leonard and some other US boxers.

This couldn't be further from the truth as Pirog had several coaches during his development as a boxer. Victor Serdyukov and Artem Lavrov are 2 coaches that Pirog trained under.

Of course, Pirog would have watched US boxers and they probably influenced his preferred style of boxing but this was not the reason he boxed the way he did. He would have boxed under the Soviet School of boxing like all other Russian boxers.

In any case, stylistically he had a distinctly different style to that of Sugar Ray Leonard and Mayweather.

Pirog does use the Philly Shell but he appears to utilize more postures of the shell to Mayweather and he cycles through these positions more frequently as part of his deceptive gameplay to confuse his opponents.

Also, another issue I had with the commentary was the idea that European boxers are stand-up with little to no movement from the waist.

So, first of all, you would need to differentiate boxers training under the Soviet school system (so boxers from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, etc) to boxers who do not (so boxers from countries outside of the Eastern Bloc).

Now the second thing is that because of Russia's previous longstanding communist regime, amateur boxing was the only means to see boxers from Russia. Most boxers inside of Russia and the various styles they boxed with would not be visible if the style was not good for amateur boxing.

So you are only seeing a low percentage of boxers coming from Russia. A style like Bivol's is significantly more representative in this select percentage because it is better suited to the amateur style. So footwork is prioritized over body and head movement.

Historically, Russia only permitted the integration of its boxers at the turn of the nineties and these were a few boxers the Russian state regulated themselves.

So very little would have been known at the time of this fight about the Soviet system to produce boxers for Pro boxing, as it would have only been 20 years up to that point that Russian boxers were involved in Pro boxing.

Unfortunately in the end Pirog's career was cut short due to a reoccurring back injury. This sadly forced him into an early retirement.
