Anaesthesia is a medically induced state that helps patients undergo surgical procedures without pain or distress. It typically involves three key components:
Amnesia – Temporary loss of memory so the patient doesn't recall the procedure.
Analgesia – Relief from pain during and after surgery.
Areflexia – Loss of reflexes, which ensures the body stays still and relaxed.
Dr. Singh further breaks down the two most common types of anaesthesia:
General Anaesthesia
Involves rendering the patient unconscious through intravenous medications or gases.
Used for major surgeries involving the chest, abdomen, brain, or when total unconsciousness is necessary.
The patient is carefully monitored throughout the procedure using specialised equipment.
Pros: No awareness or pain, complete muscle relaxation.
Cons: Longer recovery time, possible side effects like nausea or sore throat.
Spinal Anaesthesia
Involves injecting a local anaesthetic into the spinal canal, numbing the lower half of the body.
Commonly used for procedures like C-sections, lower abdominal, or limb surgeries.
The patient remains awake but pain-free.
Pros: Quicker recovery, less postoperative nausea.
Cons: Limited to surgeries below the waist, possible headache post-procedure.
